Looks like you are only allowed to have one user account per copy of Spore. It is a massively bullshit move, especially since the game has menus for changing users and even states in its manual that owners “may have multiple Spore accounts for each installation of the game.” Which they are now saying is a misprint, fucking ludicrous.

The impression I have is that at some point, the Maxis people handed over their gold disc to some manager at EA and said “Here is the release version of Spore.” The EA manager then sent the disc to his staff of coders, who both locked in the various DRM measures and did final QA.
Tying product activation directly to user accounts in a 1-1 database is just bad architecture. It’s easy to see it acting that way, though, once you picture some PHB making the decision based on a stupid understanding of how things should work.

I bought the game because I really do believe in supporting the people who put in hard work. However, not only does the game lack much of the polish they bragged about, but these sorts of issues really make the old adage “Pirate, pirate pirate!” the only way to go into a game without instant regrets.
